Friday, March 30, 2018

Mark Van Doren (GSAS'20), a faculty member from 1920-1959 and faculty emeritus from 1959-1972, was a legendary classroom presence who inspired generations of Columbia students. He was a Pulitzer Prize winning poet, novelist, playwright, critic, editor and biographer, as well as a scholar and teacher. The Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching is awarded annually to a faculty member for his or her humanity, devotion to truth and inspiring leadership.

In awarding the Mark van Doren Award for Teaching to Prof. Viswanathan, the student Committee chairs wrote the following:
"Committee members were struck by the manner in which you directed the conversation and the unmistakably global scale of your thinking. Outside the classroom, your personal approach to mentorship, the ease of communication that you maintain, and your dedication to the South Asia Institute were some of the things that really stood out for us."

Prof. Viswanathan will be honored at the Trilling/Van Doren Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 2nd, 6-8 P.M. in Low Library.
