Biography

Sheila Byers is a Ph.D. candidate whose research focuses on early American literature from a perspective that integrates environmental humanities with settler colonial and Indigenous studies. Her dissertation, “Swarms: Epistemological Encounters in the Early American Environment,” traces the image of the swarm in natural histories, observer reports, travelogues, and frontier romances of the early Americas, drawing on the histories of science and philosophy to show how the experience of witnessing a swarm generates new ideas.

Sheila has taught multiple classes in the English department, University Writing program, and the Center for the Core. She is currently teaching Literature Humanities.
