Biography

Sophia is a fourth year Ph.D. candidate studying American literature from the early colonial period to the nineteenth-century in its philosophical, infrastructural and ecological contexts. Her dissertation, provisionally titled "Subtle Paths: Underworlds and Waterways in the Literature of Early-American Exploration," traces the protean concept of "subtlety" and its relationship to experiences of submersion across a literary history that begins in the watery underworld(s) of the North American tropics and survives the restructuring of thought in Puritan New England.
