M.A. Essay Prizes for 2020

We are delighted to announce the recipeints of the prizes for M.A. Essays written during the 2019-20 academic year:

  • Winner, Miron Cristo-Loveanu Prize for Best M.A. Essay: Christine Prevas for  "A Not-So-Subtle Way Out: Alternative Logics of Space and Self in Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer and Parasite." Sponsor: Jack Halberstam; second reader: Frances Negrón-Muntaner.

 

  • Honorable mention in the Miron Cristo-Loveanu Prize: Pranav Menon for "'Papercuts': Man vs. Literature in B.S. Johnson’s Autobiographical Novels." Sponsor: Matthew Hart; second reader, Nicholas Dames.

 

  • Bunner Award for Best M.A. Essay in American literature: Harrison Whitaker for "A New Kind of Western: Cinema of Change in McCabe & Mrs. Miller." Sponsor: Maura Spiegel; second reader, Rachel Adams.

 

  • Rachel Wetzsteon Prize for Best M.A. Essay in 20th- and 21st-century poetry: Julie Kilzer Rosenkranz for “From Number to Face: Rudolf’s Kassner’s Influence on W.H. Auden.” Sponsor: Edward Mendelson; second reader, Joseph Albernaz.

 

  • Honorable mention in the Wetzsteon Prize: Tyler Grand Pre for "Inflecting the French: The Poetics and Politics of Intersubjectivity in Aimé Césaire’s Cahier d’un retour au pays natal." Sponsor: Brent Edwards; second reader, Matthew Hart.

Huge congratulations to all involved, including the many other students whose work, while not honored in these competitions, represented the culmination of a year's hard reading and thinking, talking and writing--much of it in bad and unwelcome circumstances.
