Professor Edward W. Tayler

Edward W. Tayler (1931-2018)

The Department of English and Comparative Literature is saddened to announce the death, on Monday April 23, of Edward W. Tayler, Lionel Trilling Professor Emeritus in The Humanities. Educated at Amherst and Stanford, Ted Tayler taught at Columbia from 1960 to 1999, specializing in the poetry and prose of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with special attention to Shakespeare and Milton. His books included Nature and Art in Renaissance Literature (1964); Literary Criticism of Seventeenth-Century England (1967); Milton's Poetry (1979); and Donne's Idea of a Woman (1991), and his honors included a Guggenheim Fellowship (1969) and the Milton Society’s “Honored Scholar” award (1989). At Columbia, he was a celebrated and beloved teacher, who won the “Great Teacher” award from the Society of Older Graduates (1985), the Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching and Leadership (1986), the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching (1996), and an award for Distinguished Service to Core Curriculum.
